L-lactate dehydrogenase (LD)

  • LDH-1: heart and RBCs
  • LDH-2: WBCs. It is also found in heart and red blood cells, but less than LDH-1.
  • LDH-3: lung tissue.
  • LDH-4: WBCs, kidney, pancreas cells, and lymph nodes.
  • LDH-5: found in the liver and skeletal muscles.

Lactate dehydrogenase is an important group of isoenzymes of the anaerobic metabolic pathway.  A form of L-lactate dehydrogenase is present in the liver (LDH-5) and almost all body tissues.

Conditions that can cause increased LDH in the blood may include:

LDH is also a non-specific marker of tissue turnover, which is a normal metabolic process. Elevated levels may indicate liver damage but can be elevated in many other disorders.
